UK Groundwater Forum

The UK Groundwater Forum is a collaborative platform aimed at raising awareness and understanding of groundwater—an essential but often overlooked natural resource in the UK. Here’s a summary of its purpose and activities:

  • Educational and Awareness Role: The Forum provides accessible information about groundwater, including its role in supplying drinking water, supporting rivers and wetlands, and sustaining ecosystems. It offers resources for schools, universities, and the general public to promote groundwater literacy
  • Scientific and Technical Dialogue: It serves as a space for dialogue among key stakeholders—scientists, policymakers, regulators, and industry professionals—on current and emerging issues in groundwater management. This includes topics like pollution, over-abstraction, climate change impacts, and sustainable drainage
  • Support for the Groundwater Community: The Forum is a voluntary association supported by organizations such as the Environment Agency, NERC, and SNIFFER. It aims to benefit the entire UK groundwater community by facilitating knowledge exchange and collaboration.
  • Resources and Events: It hosts events, publishes educational materials (like the book Groundwater – Our Hidden Asset), and provides downloadable diagrams and videos to help communicate complex groundwater concepts

Building on its historically active role, the UK Groundwater Forum is currently experiencing a revival, supported in part by funding from the UK IAH Chapter.
