Application for 2026

The process and timeline for the 2026 award is:

  • Course leaders to make students aware of the John Day Bursary at the start of the course (late September to early October).
  • John Day Bursary winner awarded at the Ineson Lecture in November.
  • It is understood that most dissertation topics are chosen between January and April.
  • Applications will open in May 2026. The application will be circulated to university course leads to share with students and available on our website.
  • Students to submit an application by 31st July 2026, which includes an overview of their dissertation proposal and must be signed off by their supervisorTheir dissertation must be a groundwater-related topic to qualify for the award. 
  • Course leaders or supervisors may wish to identify and encourage students who have potential to submit a good quality application.
  • Winner will be notified by 1st September 2026. It is expected that the student will be available to present a poster on their dissertation at the Ineson Lecture in November 2026.

The bursary has a value of £1,000 and the successful applicant also receives a 1-year free membership of IAH, as well as the prestige of receiving the award. The bursary winner is also invited to submit a poster for presentation at the annual Ineson Lecture, usually held in November at the Geological Society, London. Please note that the bursary winner may use the monies as they wish.
